Beijing Musings is really simply about recording some of my experiences since arriving in Beijing in October 2010.
I made the decision to live here following a summer holiday in 2010. I had been living in Oxford, UK for the past 8 years, first studying Architecture and then working, and I’d decided that I needed a drastic change in my life. Beijing is such an exciting and vibrant place to be in; there are so many opportunities and experiences that you are exposed to and interesting people that you get to meet. Having had the thought of moving to China, the idea just kept growing. It was the first time I legitimately feared regretting not having done something, so I decided to do it.
It has to be said that a big part of taking that step was the knowledge that I would have a support network once I arrived. My mother is originally from Beijing, and whilst she is now based in the UK she comes to Beijing around 3 times a year on business, and my father (who is British), is based in Shanghai. But of most relevance was the fact that my cousin David had been living here for almost 7 years, so by no means was I to be without support.
As the months continue to go by, I’m still enjoying Beijing immensely. Moving here was without a doubt one of the best decisions I have ever made. This blog is an opportunity to share my experiences, stories and musings about my time in Beijing with whoever is interested. For others who happen to stumble upon this blog, I hope it will provide useful and perhaps provide a little of that “support network feeling” I was lucky to experience.
